Previously, the advanced threat protection capabilities found in Microsoft Defender for Endpoint were only available through expensive enterprise licences. Defender for Business makes these same capabilities — including next-generation antivirus, endpoint detection and response (EDR), automated investigation, and threat analytics — accessible at a price point designed for growing organisations.

The platform uses AI and cloud intelligence from Microsoft's global threat intelligence network, which processes over 65 trillion signals daily, to detect and block known and unknown threats in real time. Automated investigation and remediation handles the majority of alerts without human intervention, resolving threats within minutes rather than hours. This is critical for organisations without dedicated security operations teams.

Defender for Business integrates natively with Microsoft 365, Intune, and Entra ID, creating a comprehensive security posture without third-party tools. Threat and vulnerability management continuously assesses endpoints for software vulnerabilities and misconfigurations, providing prioritised recommendations to reduce attack surface. Attack surface reduction rules block risky behaviours like macro execution, credential theft, and suspicious PowerShell usage.
