With a single API and consistent experience across all storage classes, Cloud Storage simplifies data management while automatically optimising costs based on access patterns. It serves as the foundation for data lakes, backup repositories, content delivery, and application data storage.

Four storage classes — Standard, Nearline, Coldline, and Archive — provide a cost spectrum from frequently accessed hot data to long-term archival. Object Lifecycle Management automatically transitions objects between classes based on age or access frequency, ensuring you always pay the optimal rate. Autoclass takes this further by automatically selecting the most cost-effective storage class for each object based on its actual access pattern.

Data durability is designed for 99.999999999% (11 nines) annual durability, achieved through erasure coding across multiple facilities. Dual-region and multi-region buckets replicate data across geographic boundaries for disaster recovery and low-latency global access. Cloud Storage integrates natively with BigQuery, Dataflow, and other Google Cloud services for analytics, and supports S3-compatible APIs for migration from AWS.
